Journaling For Growth In 2022

So, here's the scenario...You tell yourself that you are going to start journaling to help clear your mind and stimulate deep thinking. You run to the store, spend tons of money on a beautiful journal, you get home, grab the best pen you have, you get in your writing stance just to realize hmmm you have nothing to write about.

The benefits of Journaling

  • Creates a safe space to be authentic

  • Provides clarity of emotions and feelings

  • Promotes self-awareness

  • Allows you to release any repressed feelings or emotions that be altering your behaviors

  • Help you "let things go" and move on

  • Improves communication with self

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

  • Helps to a achieve goals

I know first-hand that trying to keep up with a journal can be challenging. It seems like a doable task, and it is, however, it takes planning sometimes. Life can get busy and before you know it your new best friend (your journal) has found it's way to the back of the shelf. Here are some tips and tricks for allowing journaling to become a daily activity and for getting the most out of your journaling experience:

  • Be Authentic. Your Journal will not judge you and you should not judge yourself while journaling. This is the time for you be blunt, bold and brave.

  • Make it accessible. As a student and clinician, I find myself traveling from point A to B a lot and because of it I forget to journal or feel I do not have time to be productive with journaling. However, when I made my journal accessible (which will look different for everyone) I made sure I took it everywhere including vacations.

  • Make your journal your own. Don’t limit yourself to just writing if that’s not really your thing - add pictures or drawing or movie ticket stubs!

  • Create a journaling routine. Decide what time of day you’re going to write in your journal and create a routine around that, such as waking up and journaling while drinking your morning coffee or journaling right before you go to sleep.

  • Set reminders on your phone. If journaling is a new addition to your daily routine, having a reminder on your phone will help you turn writing in your journal into a daily habit!

  • Don’t stress or punish yourself if you miss a day, it is bound to happen!
